SEO performance rarely drops for one single reason. A decline in clicks, impressions or average position can come from seasonality, technical problems, Google algorithm volatility, indexing delays, content quality issues or simply a delay in how Google Search Console processes data.

The key is not to react too quickly. A structured diagnostic process helps separate real SEO problems from normal fluctuations, reporting delays or expected seasonal behaviour. This guide explains how to investigate ranking drops, audit blog content, fix structured data issues and troubleshoot pages that are not getting indexed or generating results.

1. Start by identifying what has actually changed

When clicks are dropping or average position is down, the first step is to compare performance over time. Use Google Search Console to run a week-over-week comparison and check whether the decline is isolated to a specific page, country, device, query group or content type.

If the affected page is seasonal, the drop may be expected. For example, gift guides, holiday articles or event-led pages often lose traffic once the seasonal search demand disappears. In that case, the priority is not necessarily to panic or rewrite the whole page. Instead, look for supporting content that can act as a bridge between seasonal peaks and evergreen demand.

A seasonal page should ideally connect to more stable, year-round content. This helps preserve internal relevance, distribute authority and reduce the dependency on short traffic spikes.

2. Check whether Google is expanding your query visibility

A lower average position is not always bad news. Sometimes Google starts showing a page for many more long-tail queries, even if those new queries have low positions and no clicks yet.

This is often the result of query expansion, where Google tests your page against related searches that are not explicitly targeted on the page but are contextually connected to the content.

In Search Console, this can appear as:

More queries appearing for the same URL.

Many queries with zero clicks.

Lower average ranking positions.

Stable or slightly higher impressions.

This can pull down average position, but it does not automatically mean the page has lost quality. It may indicate that Google is testing the page across a broader query set. The right response is to review those new queries and decide whether any of them deserve stronger coverage in the content.

If relevant long-tail queries are appearing, expand the article with useful sections, clearer headings or more precise answers. If the queries are irrelevant, the page may need tighter topical focus.

3. Review Core Web Vitals and page experience signals

If the drop affects multiple pages, especially across the same template or page type, check Core Web Vitals in Google Search Console.

Go to the Core Web Vitals report and inspect whether poor URLs are increasing on mobile or desktop. Pay particular attention to issues such as CLS, LCP or loading delays. These can indicate template-level problems, server delays, image issues or JavaScript performance problems.

When reviewing affected URL groups, open the example URLs and test them in PageSpeed Insights. Do not rely on one isolated URL. Test a small sample of affected pages to identify a pattern.

Look for problems such as:

Large images delaying rendering.

Unstable layout shifts.

Heavy JavaScript execution.

Slow server response times.

Template elements loading inconsistently.

If multiple affected pages share the same problem, escalate it to the development team with specific examples, screenshots and PageSpeed Insights results.

4. Check crawl stats and server response times

A drop in crawl activity can affect how quickly Google discovers, refreshes and evaluates your pages. In Google Search Console, go to Settings and open Crawl Stats.

Review whether total crawl requests are declining and whether average response time has increased. If server response times are consistently high, Google may reduce crawling because the site becomes more expensive or unreliable to fetch.

As a rule of thumb, rising response times should be investigated quickly, especially if they coincide with traffic drops, delayed indexing or a sudden reduction in crawl requests.

This is particularly important for websites with frequent content updates, large blog sections or many international URLs.

5. Inspect affected URLs manually

If specific URLs have dropped, inspect them directly in Google Search Console. Use the URL Inspection tool and run a live test.

This helps answer several important questions:

Can Google access the page?

Is the page blocked by robots.txt?

Is the page rendered correctly?

Is the canonical URL correct?

Is the page indexable?

If the live test screenshot shows the page content correctly, the issue is unlikely to be a basic rendering or robots.txt problem. If the content is missing, broken or blocked, then the problem may be technical rather than content-related.

Also check whether any recent changes were made to robots.txt, canonical tags, noindex directives, hreflang, redirects or page templates.

6. Check whether Google is in the middle of an update

Sometimes rankings move because Google is testing or rolling out broader search changes. Before making major decisions, check volatility tools such as Semrush Sensor.

If there is high volatility across the search results, the decline may be partly connected to a Google update. However, this should not be used as an excuse to ignore the problem. Algorithm updates often expose pages that are weak, thin, outdated, repetitive or less useful than competitors.

If a page drops during a volatile period, review it carefully. Ask whether it genuinely offers stronger value than the pages now ranking above it.

7. Account for Google Search Console data delays

Google Search Console data is not always updated in real time. In some cases, reports can lag by several days. This means clicks, impressions and average position may appear frozen or incomplete.

If Search Console data looks wrong or delayed, cross-check with other sources before making conclusions. Use GA4 sessions, Semrush rankings or other SEO dashboards to validate whether the drop is real.

If the difference between tools is significant, monitor the page for a few more days and avoid making aggressive changes based only on incomplete Search Console data.

8. Measure whether the SEO issue affects business performance

Not every SEO fluctuation has the same commercial impact. A drop in informational blog impressions may look dramatic, but it may have little effect on revenue. A smaller drop on a transactional landing page may be much more serious.

Segment affected pages by business value. Prioritise pages that drive conversions, revenue, qualified traffic or strategic visibility.

A practical SEO monitoring setup should combine keyword and page-level data with business performance. This makes it easier to distinguish between visibility noise and genuine business risk.

9. Audit blog content before and after publishing

Content audits should not stop once an article is published. Even well-optimised articles can become stagnant, outdated or too generic over time.

Surfer, content optimisation tools and AI assistants can help identify issues, but the final judgement should always be editorial and strategic. The goal is not just to increase keyword usage. The goal is to make the page more useful, more specific and more credible.

For articles that are dropping or not growing, check whether the content needs fresh information. Recent events, updated examples, new statistics, current prices, seasonal context or practical details can all improve perceived freshness and usefulness.

Internal linking should also be reviewed. Use Google Search Console exports to identify related URLs and queries, then propose relevant anchor text from pages that already have visibility.

10. Fix unparseable structured data errors

Structured data errors can prevent rich results from appearing and may trigger warnings in Google Search Console. When Google detects an issue, it usually sends an email and provides a link to the affected report.

The process should be systematic:

Open the Search Console notification and click the button to review the structured data issue.

Open the invalid items and identify the affected URLs.

Click each affected URL to see the exact error and highlighted code line.

Copy the schema markup from the page and correct the specific field causing the issue.

Validate the updated markup using Google’s Rich Results Test.

Update the schema in the CMS.

Wait for deployment.

Return to Search Console and click Validate Fix.

Common causes include missing required fields, incorrect event properties, invalid date formats, fields that should not be present, or schema types that do not match the page content.

The important point is to fix the exact error Google is flagging, not to rewrite the entire schema unnecessarily.

11. Troubleshoot pages that are not getting indexed

If a blog post or page was published recently and is not showing results, start with timing. Content published late in the day may not go live until the next day, depending on the publishing workflow.

Once the page is live, inspect the URL in Google Search Console. If it is not indexed, request indexing. Google may take a couple of days to crawl and index a new page, especially if it has not been discovered naturally through strong internal links.

If the page still does not index, investigate possible quality or technical problems.

A very short opening paragraph can make the page look thin when rendered. Make sure the page has enough visible introductory content to establish its purpose clearly.

Check that there is only one H1. Multiple H1s are not always fatal, but they can signal poor template structure or unclear page hierarchy.

Validate the schema markup. Broken or misleading structured data can create quality and eligibility issues.

Review the main image. If the hero image is too large or slow to load, Google may struggle to render the page efficiently.

Check for duplicate or near-duplicate content. If another page already covers the same topic, Google may choose one version as canonical and ignore the newer URL.

Indexing problems are often a combination of weak content differentiation, poor internal linking and technical inefficiencies. Treat the page as a whole rather than looking for only one isolated error.

12. Build a repeatable SEO response process

The best way to manage SEO issues is to avoid random troubleshooting. Every traffic drop or indexing problem should follow a clear workflow:

First, confirm whether the issue is real or caused by reporting delays.

Second, identify whether the decline is seasonal, query-related, technical or algorithmic.

Third, inspect affected URLs manually.

Fourth, check crawlability, rendering, Core Web Vitals and server response times.

Fifth, review content quality, freshness, EEAT and internal links.

Sixth, validate schema and indexing status.

Finally, prioritise fixes based on business impact.

SEO performance is never static. Rankings move, Google tests pages against new queries, seasonal demand changes and technical issues appear over time. A disciplined diagnostic process makes it easier to respond calmly, identify the real cause and apply the right fix.
